Allan Border Field

Brisbane (Albion), Queensland, Australia

Allan Border Field, Brisbane (Albion), Australia — opened 1960, 254 rugby league games hosted, home of Fortitude Valley Diehards (Brisbane Rugby League) — now a cricket-only venue.

Sourcing caveat: Sources disagree on how long the Diehards used this ground before 1960: Austadiums states 'from 1909', while Rugby League Project's own results database (the basis for this directory's 254-game count) begins only in 1960. No independent source found corroborates the 1909 figure specifically for this ground, so it has been noted but not adopted as the opening date. Capacity figures found are all post-2022 cricket-era numbers (4,000 per Austadiums, 6,300 per Wikipedia) and are not attributed to the ground's rugby league period, so no rugby-league-era capacity is given.

Ground facts

Opened1960 (Rugby League Project's own results database for the ground — the source for our directory's 254-game count — begins with a Fortitude Valley 31-8 Redcliffe match on 19 June 1960. Austadiums separately states Fortitude Valley Diehards used the ground 'from 1909', but that earlier date is not corroborated by RLP's results and may refer to the club's founding rather than to this specific ground; 1960 is used here as the better-corroborated figure for rugby league at this site.)

Name history

  • Neumann Oval — in use by 1960-1995 for rugby league; named for Fred 'Firpo' Neumann, a former Fortitude Valley captain and Queensland/Australian representative player
  • Allan Border Field — since 1995, renamed by Queensland Cricket in honour of former Australian Test cricket captain Allan Border

Rugby league history

Neumann Oval, in the Brisbane suburb of Albion, was the home ground of the Fortitude Valley Diehards in the Brisbane Rugby League competition from 1960 until the club's relocation to Caboolture in 1995, after which it folded. Valleys won multiple BRL premierships during their Neumann Oval tenure and produced representative talent including Wally Lewis. The Diehards' junior ranks had already begun shifting away to Emerson Park, Grange, from the early 1970s, but the senior club remained at Neumann Oval through to its 1995 move. Following the Diehards' departure and eventual demise, Queensland Cricket purchased the ground and renamed it Allan Border Field; it has since been developed as Queensland's state cricket venue and National Cricket Campus, with no rugby league played there since.

Now Queensland's primary state cricket venue (home to the Queensland Bulls and the Australian Cricket Academy since 2004), redeveloped as the National Cricket Campus with a 2022 upgrade to international standard; current cricket capacity is reported as around 4,000-6,300 depending on source/configuration, which postdates and is unrelated to the ground's rugby league era.
