Rugby league history
Leichhardt Oval was Balmain's settled home from 1934 and remains one of two shared home grounds for Wests Tigers since the 2000 Balmain/Western Suburbs merger. It hosted four NSW v Queensland interstate matches between 1978 and 1981, and staged its first full international Tests in June 2019 ahead of a State of Origin game, along with the first standalone NRLW match later that year. Under a 2025-2026 stadium strategy, the Wests Tigers' regular-season allocation at Leichhardt Oval was reduced to three games a year (from five), with the club also playing a pre-season trial there annually.
