Athletic Grounds
Tamworth, New South Wales, Australia
Athletic Grounds, Tamworth, Australia — opened not confirmed, 6 rugby league games hosted, home of no dedicated rugby league club tenant identified — the two matches independently confirmed as genuinely played in Tamworth are Northern NSW/Central regional representative fixtures against touring NSW Rugby League sides.
Sourcing caveat: No opening date, capacity, floodlight or playing-surface information was found for the genuine Tamworth ground in any source. Our directory's recorded "6 games, top crowd 9,000, 1921-1938" for this venue should be treated as unreliable pending a correction at the source (Rugby League Project) — we have published only the 2 matches we could independently confirm as genuinely Tamworth fixtures, both without a source beyond Rugby League Project itself.
Ground facts
| Opened | not confirmed (A genuine data-quality problem was found and is disclosed here rather than silently republished: Rugby League Project's own venue page for "Athletic Grounds" (used as the source for our directory's Tamworth, NSW entry) mixes together matches from two entirely different, unrelated grounds sharing the same generic name — Tamworth's Athletic Grounds in Australia, and Rochdale's Athletic Grounds in England, home of the separate County Championship fixtures between Lancashire and Yorkshire. Independent verification confirms three County Championship fixtures (4 October 1921, 22 March 1930, 12 February 1938, all Lancashire vs Yorkshire) and a 27 February 1928 Great Britain touring-squad trial match were all played at the Athletic Grounds in Rochdale, England, not Tamworth, New South Wales — corroborated by Wikipedia's County Championship (rugby league) article and a specialist UK rugby league statistics site. This means our directory's recorded "top crowd 9,000" for Tamworth is very likely actually the Rochdale trial match's crowd, not a Tamworth figure at all.) |

Name history
- Athletic Grounds — the name used in Rugby League Project's own records — evidently shared, in error, between this Tamworth ground and an unrelated Rochdale, England venue of the same generic name
Rugby league history
We are publishing only these two matches as confirmed Tamworth, NSW fixtures. Four further matches that appear on Rugby League Project's "Athletic Grounds" venue page — including the 9,000-crowd 1928 Great Britain touring-squad trial our directory records as Tamworth's top crowd — were independently confirmed via Wikipedia and a specialist UK rugby league statistics site to have actually been played at the separate, unrelated Athletic Grounds in Rochdale, Lancashire, England. This is a data-attribution error inside Rugby League Project's own records (the two grounds evidently share a database entry due to their identical generic name), not an error we have introduced, and we have not repeated it here.
