Rugby league history
Athletic Park's fame is overwhelmingly as a rugby UNION ground — the historic home of Wellington rugby and, later, the Hurricanes, host to 42 All Blacks Tests (1904-1999), four 1987 Rugby World Cup matches and the famous 1961 "Cyclone Test." Its rugby league usage was minor and occasional: essentially two isolated fixtures in the early 1990s — the confirmed 1990 Kiwis v Kangaroos Test, and a 1992 Tooheys Challenge Cup semi-final between the Brisbane Broncos and Western Suburbs Magpies played there as part of the same pre-season day that saw another match at Auckland's Carlaw Park. The ground closed permanently in 1999, was demolished, and the site redeveloped as a retirement village, with Wellington's major sporting events moving to the new stadium that became today's Sky Stadium.
