Club history

The Brisbane Broncos were formed in 1987, when Queensland Rugby League power-brokers, keen to secure a genuine local stake in the establishment of a truly national competition, backed a consortium fronted by former Brisbane rugby league figures Barry Maranta and Paul Morgan. The syndicate paid a $500,000 licence fee to join the NSWRL for the 1988 season, becoming one of Queensland's first clubs in the competition. Maranta pushed the "Broncos" name after admiring the NFL's Denver Broncos, while advertising figure John Singleton talked founders into maroon, white and gold over Brisbane City Council blue — maroon for Queensland tradition, gold for the sunshine state.

The Broncos began life at Lang Park (later Suncorp Stadium) before a sponsorship clash forced a move to QEII Stadium in 1993; they returned to a redeveloped Lang Park in 2003. Under foundation coach Wayne Bennett, who stayed for 21 years, and with captain Wally Lewis and later Allan Langer pulling the strings, Brisbane built the most feared club side of the code's professional era. Premierships came in 1992, 1993, the Super League premiership of 1997, and again in 1998 and 2000, powered by stars like Gorden Tallis, Steve Renouf and Darren Lockyer. A long title drought followed the 2006 premiership, punctuated by a heartbreaking 2023 grand-final collapse against Penrith, before Michael Maguire's side broke through again in 2025. Their fiercest modern rivalry is with the North Queensland Cowboys.

Sourcing caveat: Founding is sometimes dated 1988 (first season played) rather than 1987 (club formed/licence granted); we use 1987 as formation, 1988 as debut season.
