Rugby league history
Rockhampton's main sporting ground has been the home of rugby football in Central Queensland since 1890, taking the name Browne Park in 1958 in honour of long-serving Rockhampton Rugby League president Jack Browne. It became the established home of representative Central Queensland and Queensland Residents rugby league, hosting touring international sides (New Zealand in 1959, Great Britain in 1984, France in 1960 and 1990) and later Queensland Cup fixtures for the Central Queensland Capras, plus occasional NRL trial and premiership matches. A $60 million, Queensland Government-backed redevelopment — replacing the old grandstand with a new three-level, 3,200-seat stand under a mass-timber roof — was completed and reopened the ground in May 2026 under a new naming-rights partnership with rail freight operator Aurizon, positioning the venue to host higher-profile fixtures including potential NRL premiership matches.
