Ground facts
| Opened | Not documented (No confirmed opening date was found for the ground itself. A local history source records organised football in Barcaldine dating to 1892, but at a different described location, so this is not treated as the ground's opening date. Rugby League Project's own recorded match history at this venue only goes back to 1952. A separate 'Barcaldine Showgrounds' is referenced elsewhere as the site of the Barcaldine Rugby League Clubhouse -- whether this is the same site as Barcaldine Sports Ground, an adjacent site, or a genuinely different ground could not be resolved from available sources.) |

Name history
Rugby league history
A small-town, multi-purpose sports ground (also used for cricket and horse events) in outback central-west Queensland, home of the Barcaldine Sand Goannas, 13-time Central West Rugby League A-Grade premiers. Its most notable rugby league history came from hosting full international touring sides in the 1950s: New Zealand (1952, crowd 2,371, the top figure recorded on this site) and France (1955, crowd 2,250) both visited, remarkable attendances for a remote outback community. A 1952 council proposal to add floodlighting was rejected over concern it would interfere with the ground's other uses (horse events and cricket), suggesting the ground had no floodlights at that time; a timing clock, not floodlights, was added in 1975. No formal capacity figure was found.
