Belmont Oval

Perth (Belmont), Western Australia, Australia

Belmont Oval, Perth (Belmont), Australia — opened 15 May 1955, 4 rugby league games hosted, home of built specifically as rugby league's Western Australian headquarters — effectively the home of the Western Australia representative rugby league team through this era rather than a specific club.

Sourcing caveat: Capacity, floodlight status, and formal playing-surface type were not found in any source — one account notes the 1955 opening match "nearly didn't proceed due to complaints about the sandy playing surface," suggesting the ground was considered substandard at the time, but no formal classification was found. A fourth match (Western Australia vs North Sydney) is recorded by Rugby League Project without an established date within this window.

Name history

  • Belmont Oval — also referred to as Belmont Park, at the junction of Stoneham Street and Great Eastern Highway, Belmont — its only name during the rugby league era

Rugby league history

Belmont Oval was purpose-built in 1955 as rugby league's dedicated home and headquarters in Perth, at a time when the code was trying to establish a foothold in an AFL-dominant state. It was the standard venue for visiting international touring sides (France twice, Great Britain once) to play the WA representative side during the 1955-1962 period, before the ground was later repurposed for baseball (as "Parry Fields" in the 1980s) and eventually demolished in 1997 amid redevelopment of the surrounding area.
