Ground facts

Opened1901 (Brisbane City Council's own heritage listing gives a precise opening date of 14 December 1901. One secondary source (Austadiums) separately states '1920', which appears to refer to later formalisation of the sporting oval/grandstand rather than the park's original opening — the Council heritage source is treated as authoritative for the opening date.)

Name history

  • West End Reserve (also called West End Recreation Reserve) — 1901–1909
  • Davies Park — since October 1909 (renamed to honour Alderman John Davies after a 600-signature local petition)

Rugby league history

One of Brisbane rugby league's earliest and longest-continuously-used grounds, Davies Park (originally the West End Reserve) was home to South Brisbane/Carlton (later Southern Suburbs) from the code's first Brisbane competition season in 1909, and to the West End club from 1910. A memorial grandstand honouring Alderman Davies opened in 1914. Souths went on to enjoy a strong post-war era at the ground, winning four premierships in nine years, and the Queensland Rugby League has leased fields there since the 1920s. The ground briefly doubled as Brisbane's first speedway venue (Olympia Motors Speedway) in the late 1920s, hosting the Australian Solo Championship motorcycle titles in 1929. It remains in active rugby league use today as home of the Souths Logan Magpies in the Queensland Cup, giving it well over a century of continuous rugby league history.

Also used historically for cricket, tennis, basketball, beach volleyball, motorcycle speedway (1920s-30s) and, today, is home to West End Football Club (soccer) and several Brisbane rowing club sheds.
