Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys

Barcelona (Montjuïc), Barcelona, Spain

Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, Barcelona (Montjuïc), Spain — opened 1929, 1 rugby league games hosted, home of no rugby league club tenant; the ground's tenants have included RCD Espanyol (football, 1997-2009), the Barcelona Dragons (American football, 1991-2002), and briefly FC Barcelona (2023-2025, during Camp Nou's renovation) — a single recorded rugby league fixture, part of the Catalans Dragons' pre-Super League promotional efforts in Catalonia.

Sourcing caveat: Our venue directory records exactly one rugby league match here (2009). A separate general-web source describes an additional 1993 Rugby League European Cup Final at this venue, which we have not independently corroborated against a specialist rugby league source (e.g. Rugby League Project, whose venue page for this ground could not be located) and have therefore not published as a confirmed second fixture.

Name history

  • Estadi de Montjuïc — 1929–1989, the original name
  • Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys — since 1989, renamed ahead of the 1992 Olympics for Lluís Companys, President of Catalonia executed in 1940

Rugby league history

This 2009 Super League fixture, in which the Catalans Dragons hosted Warrington Wolves, was a promotional showcase intended to grow rugby league's profile in Catalonia during the Dragons' early Super League years — the same broader strategy that later saw a Catalans fixture staged at Barcelona's Camp Nou, covered elsewhere on this site. Some general sources also describe a 1993 Rugby League European Cup Final at this stadium between a Catalan XIII side and Huddersfield, predating Catalans Dragons' 2006 Super League entry; this earlier fixture is not reflected in our venue directory's recorded match count for this ground, and is noted here only as an unresolved possibility rather than published as a confirmed second match.

Hosted the 1992 Summer Olympics opening and closing ceremonies and athletics; also the historic home ground of RCD Espanyol (1997-2009) and, briefly, FC Barcelona (2023-2025).
