Groundz Precinct

Dapto, New South Wales, Australia

Groundz Precinct, Dapto, Australia — opened As Dapto Showground, developed in the late 1800s on 10 acres donated by Patrick Hill Osborne, later expanded to around 22 acres; the Dapto Agricultural and Horticultural Society itself was founded 8 Nov 1856, 23 rugby league games hosted, home of Dapto Canaries RLFC, from the early 1960s to present.

Sourcing caveat: This site's own recorded start year of 1909 for rugby league use is not confirmed by available sources, which document club activity only from the early 1960s; this gap is flagged rather than filled with a guess.

Name history

  • Dapto Showground — traditional name, long-standing, still used by some general references
  • Groundz Precinct / 'The Groundz' — current rebranded name

Rugby league history

An Illawarra region multi-purpose venue best known for greyhound racing ('Dapto Dogs', 1937-2025, a long-running Thursday-night institution that hosted the Greens Super Coat classic with a then-world-record $100,000 prize purse in 1991) and the annual Dapto Show, alongside its role as home ground of the Dapto Canaries rugby league club. Greyhound racing ended in Sep 2025 after around 90 years; the venue has since been rebranded as a community and hospitality precinct.

Greyhound racing (1937-2025) and the annual Dapto agricultural show, both far longer-running uses of the site than rugby league.
