Hampden Oval

Sydney (Hampden), New South Wales, Australia

Hampden Oval, Sydney (Hampden), Australia — opened 6 May 1911 — SS Federals 21-7 Sydney, NSWRFL Reserve Grade, per this site's own match records, 21 rugby league games hosted, home of Not a single club's home ground — hosted NSWRFL Reserve Grade fixtures for several Sydney clubs' lower teams (SS Federals, Sydney, Annandale, Randwick, Surry Hills, Easts, Waverley, Grosvenor, Marrickville, Mosman, Newtown, Redfern), 1911 and 1915-1916.

Sourcing caveat: Whether this entry represents a genuinely separate pitch from 'Trumper Oval' (this site's own separate directory entry) or the same ground under an inconsistent historical record is not settled with full certainty; the best-supported reading, based on matched fixture dates across both entries, is a separate secondary pitch within the same sporting reserve. Capacity is not confirmed.

Ground facts

Opened6 May 1911 — SS Federals 21-7 Sydney, NSWRFL Reserve Grade, per this site's own match records (UPDATED at batch 17 (see below): this entry was originally written up treating Hampden Oval as possibly simply an early name for the same single ground later known as Trumper Park Oval. A later batch's research into this site's own separate 'Trumper Oval' entry (1915-1942, in the same Paddington precinct) found direct date-and-score matches between Eastern Suburbs first-grade fixtures recorded at 'Trumper Oval' and contemporary 1915 sources describing those same matches as played 'at Hampden' — while this site's own Hampden Oval results also show a separate reserve-grade fixture on one of those very same dates. The better-supported picture is therefore that 'Hampden Park,' Paddington (renamed Trumper Park in 1931) was a sporting reserve with more than one pitch, and this Hampden Oval entry most likely represents a secondary/reserve-grade pitch within that reserve, distinct from the main first-grade ground tracked separately in this site's directory as Trumper Oval — not simply an earlier name for that same single pitch, as originally suggested here.)

Name history

  • Hampden Oval — 1911-1916, within the Hampden Park sporting reserve, Paddington; the reserve itself was renamed Trumper Park in 1931, honouring cricketer Victor Trumper, though this specific reserve-grade pitch's own subsequent history is not confirmed

Rugby league history

All 21 rugby league matches recorded here were Reserve Grade fixtures, not first-grade games, spanning 1911 and 1915-1916 with an apparent gap in 1912-1914 that may relate to First World War disruption to competitions, though this is not confirmed. This site's own directory separately tracks a 'Trumper Oval' entry (1915-1942) for first-grade Eastern Suburbs fixtures within the same Paddington sporting reserve, written up alongside this entry; see that entry for the reserve's main-pitch history and its 1931 renaming to Trumper Park.
