Name history
Rugby league history
Harker Oval's four recorded matches, spanning 1978 to 2013, are unconnected one-off higher-grade fixtures rather than a continuous top-flight tenancy: a 1978 Amco Cup interstate match (Newcastle 51 def. WA Firsts 5), a 1983 KB Cup fixture between Sydney clubs Canterbury-Bankstown and Penrith (7,000, the ground's recorded top crowd), and two NSW Cup (state second-tier) matches in 2011 and 2013 involving Newcastle-based sides. In rugby league terms the ground is the home of the Western Suburbs Rosellas, a foundation club of the Newcastle Rugby League dating to 1910, and has also hosted Newcastle competition finals fixtures for other clubs including Cessnock. Archival film records also show a NSW v Queensland schoolboys interstate fixture held here, at a junior representative level outside the scope of our four senior-level recorded matches.
