Rugby league history
This Tokyo Olympic-legacy stadium's only rugby league match, in November 1996, was a genuine footnote to the sport's Super League/ARL civil war: a one-off club exhibition, billed as the "Revolution Cup", in which Sydney City (the Sydney Roosters) beat Manly-Warringah 34-30 in front of 7,136. It was organised by the East Japan Rugby League Association, one of two rival bodies then trying to establish the code in Japan (a competing, Super League-aligned operation was run separately). Manly, the reigning 1996 ARL premiers, fielded a strong squad including Steve Menzies, Cliff Lyons and John Hopoate; Sydney City travelled without captain Brad Fittler and coach Phil Gould, with Arthur Beetson deputising as coach. Both clubs included some local Japanese players to build interest. The Japanese rugby league venture folded once the ARL/Super League war ended, and no further matches followed here -- the ground today hosts rugby union (Black Rams Tokyo) and football with no rugby league connection.
