Club history
Founded on 24 January 1908 at Paddington Town Hall, the Eastern Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club was one of the nine foundation clubs of the NSWRL, and the club remains officially registered under that name to this day — the only club to have played in every top-grade season since the code's Australian inception. The now-famous rooster emblem was adopted in 1967, reputedly inspired partly by the French national rugby team's Gallic rooster crest, and the club rebranded commercially as Sydney City Roosters (1995) and then simply Sydney Roosters (2000). Colours have remained navy, sky blue and red essentially unchanged.
The club's home for most of the twentieth century was the old Sydney Sports Ground, before moving to the rebuilt Sydney Football Stadium (now Allianz Stadium) in 1988. Early dominance came via three consecutive premierships (1911-1913). The club is historically associated with glamour and star recruitment, producing periodic golden eras — most notably the 1970s under legendary five-eighth Arthur Beetson and again the 2000s-2020s under high-profile marquee signings, cementing a reputation as rugby league's most continuously competitive club, never having been relegated, wound up or forced into a merger since 1908.
