Lavington Sports Ground

Albury, New South Wales, Australia

Lavington Sports Ground, Albury, Australia — opened early 1970s, 7 rugby league games hosted, home of no permanent NRL tenant; local Group 9 Rugby League clubs use it, notably the Lavington Panthers, a predecessor of today's merged Albury Thunder club.

Sourcing caveat: Wikipedia's own article states the first rugby league match here was the 1994 Challenge Cup final, which is contradicted by Rugby League Project's fuller match ledger showing an earlier 1990 Challenge Cup quarter-final doubleheader — the earlier date is used above as the better-corroborated figure.

Rugby league history

One of the Riverina region's most significant multi-purpose grounds, Lavington Sports Ground's rugby league history centres on hosting relocated NSWRL/ARL Challenge Cup fixtures through the early-to-mid 1990s, including back-to-back Challenge Cup finals in 1994 and 1995 — the second drawing the venue's recorded top crowd of 15,000 for Brisbane's win over Cronulla. It later hosted a City v Country Origin match (2011) and an NRL premiership-round fixture, Canberra v Manly, in 2015. The ground is also a major Australian Football venue (hosting the Ovens & Murray Football League Grand Final annually since 1995 and AFL pre-season matches) and has staged a Cricket World Cup ODI (1992) and A-League football.
