Ground facts

Opened1909 (Sources give three different candidate "opening" milestones for this site depending on definition: the land itself was selected by settler Mathew Carroll in January 1870; the associated show society (Maroochy Pastoral, Agricultural, Horticultural and Industrial Society) was founded in 1900 but held its first exhibition at nearby Woombye, not Nambour; and the district show was first held at the Nambour Showgrounds specifically in June 1909, which is used here as the best available showgrounds-opening date. This is a general showground date, not a rugby-league-specific one -- the earliest known rugby league use of the site was a 1921 trial match, 61 years before Rugby League Project's own tracked match history begins in 1982.)

Name history

    Rugby league history

A 14.5-hectare multi-purpose showground (equestrian events, rodeo, cricket, tennis, badminton, the annual Sunshine Coast Show) rather than a dedicated rugby league venue -- rugby league use was always secondary. Local rugby league history at Nambour predates Rugby League Project's tracked data considerably: ten local clubs adopted the code at an 8 March 1920 meeting at the Club Hotel, and a 3 June 1921 trial match between a combined Brisbane team and Nambour Rural School boys was played at the showground, though this earlier match is not in Rugby League Project's database (likely as an untracked schoolboys/exhibition fixture). Nambour won three consecutive local premierships in 1946-48. The venue remains an active Sunshine Coast Council-managed community facility, with a master-plan redevelopment process under way as of 2024.
