Newcastle Sports Ground
Newcastle-Maitland (Newcastle), New South Wales, Australia
Newcastle Sports Ground, Newcastle-Maitland (Newcastle), Australia — opened 1922, 76 rugby league games hosted, home of Newcastle representative rugby league teams (Northern Division / Newcastle first-class sides); precursor venue to the modern Newcastle Knights' home grounds.
Sourcing caveat: The relationship between 'Newcastle Sports Ground' (this entry, rugby league matches 1913-1988 per Rugby League Project) and the present-day 'Newcastle No.1 Sportsground' (a multi-sport venue with roots to 1876) is treated by our sources as very likely the same or an immediately adjoining site, but no source found stated this identity explicitly and unambiguously -- flagged rather than assumed.
Ground facts
| Opened | 1922 (Wikipedia's Newcastle Rugby League article states the ground was 'officially opened 16 September 1922' (Western Suburbs vs a Newcastle representative side, Newcastle won 20-16), but Rugby League Project's own results listing for this venue shows an earlier recorded match on 11 June 1913 (Northern Division v New Zealand, on the 1913 All Blacks/Kiwis tour) -- so organised rugby league was evidently played there at least nine years before the stated 'official opening'. Both figures are given rather than silently picking one.) |

Name history
- Newcastle Sports Ground — 1913 (earliest recorded match) / officially opened 1922 -- still the name used generically
Rugby league history
One of the oldest and most-used rugby league grounds outside Sydney, hosting Newcastle/Northern Division representative fixtures against a long line of touring international sides -- New Zealand (1913, 1925, 1938, 1952, 1956, 1959, 1963, 1967, 1978, 1986), Great Britain/Lions (multiple tours from 1914 to 1988) and French touring teams -- as well as NSW representative matches. It functioned as the Hunter region's premier rugby league venue through most of the 20th century, in the era before Newcastle's professional club (formed 1988) moved to purpose-redeveloped stadiums (Marathon Stadium, later EnergyAustralia Stadium/McDonald Jones Stadium). It is most likely one and the same site, or on the same grounds, as what is known today as Newcastle No.1 Sportsground near the Newcastle CBD (opened as a general sportsground in 1876, still hosting cricket, Australian football and rugby league), though the sources found did not explicitly confirm the two names refer to identical, unbroken tenure of the same physical ground.
The adjoining/successor Newcastle No.1 Sportsground site is a long-standing Sheffield Shield first-class cricket venue and has also hosted Australian rules football.
