Rugby league history
Cardiff RLFC finished second-bottom of the league in their sole 1951-52 season and withdrew afterward owing to very poor attendances, reportedly as low as 199 for one match; their final home fixture, against Wigan, was relocated to Maindy Stadium in north Cardiff due to expected low attendance at Penarth Road itself. The venue's primary tenant was the Cardiff Dragons speedway team, whose first home meeting was 5 Apr 1951 and who hosted a qualifying round of the 1951 Individual Speedway World Championship on 31 May 1951; speedway crowds fell from around 9,000 in 1951 to around 3,000 by 1953, and the speedway team folded mid-season 1953. Professional rugby league did not return to Cardiff until Cardiff City Blue Dragons played at Ninian Park, 1981-1984.
Primarily motorcycle speedway (Cardiff Dragons).
