The ground long predates its rugby league use by roughly six decades.) |

Name history
Rugby league history
A Botany, Sydney ground used for eight NSW Reserve Grade fixtures between 1908 and 1912, hosting a rotating set of district sides — Glebe, Eastern Suburbs, South Sydney, Grosvenor, Redfern, Waverley, Surry Hills and Sydney — rather than any single home club. No crowd figures were recorded for any of the eight games. South Sydney has a documented separate link to the venue: the club held an internal trial match here in March 1908, weeks after its founding and before its first premiership game.
Originally the grounds of the Sir Joseph Banks Hotel, a popular pleasure garden from the 1850s that hosted well-known running races under owner Frank Smith between 1884 and 1892, well before any rugby league use. The site survives today as the public Sir Joseph Banks Park.
