Trumper Oval
Sydney (Paddington), New South Wales, Australia
Trumper Oval, Sydney (Paddington), Australia — opened 3 Jul 1915 — Eastern Suburbs 32-3 Annandale, per this site's own match records; contemporary 1915 sources describe this same match as played 'at Hampden', 19 rugby league games hosted, home of Eastern Suburbs (now the Sydney Roosters), across three spells: 4 first-grade NSWRL matches in 1915, 5 in 1934, 1 in 1941 (v North Sydney).
Sourcing caveat: Capacity is not confirmed. Whether this entry and the separate 'Hampden Oval' entry represent genuinely distinct pitches or an inconsistently recorded single ground is not settled with full certainty; see the Hampden Oval entry for the fuller discussion.
Ground facts
| Opened | 3 Jul 1915 — Eastern Suburbs 32-3 Annandale, per this site's own match records; contemporary 1915 sources describe this same match as played 'at Hampden' (This site's own directory carries this venue as a separate entry from 'Hampden Oval' (written up in an earlier batch, 1911-1916, 21 games). A direct Wikipedia check of the 1915 Eastern Suburbs season independently confirmed that this venue's first two recorded fixtures (3 Jul and 9 Jul 1915, matching scores exactly) were reported at the time as played 'at Hampden' — while Hampden Oval's own results separately show a reserve-grade fixture on one of those same dates. The best-supported reading is that both entries cover distinct pitches within the same Paddington sporting reserve, Hampden Park (renamed Trumper Park in 1931 to honour cricketer Victor Trumper), with this entry being the main, first-grade pitch and Hampden Oval a secondary reserve-grade pitch; the Hampden Oval write-up has been updated accordingly.) |

Rugby league history
Built on reclaimed swamp, an old quarry and a garbage dump (requiring the ground to be elevated by up to 13 feet in places), this Paddington reserve hosted Eastern Suburbs' first-grade rugby league fixtures across three separate spells between 1915 and 1942. Renamed Trumper Park in 1931 to honour cricketer Victor Trumper (1877-1915), it has since become a significant multi-purpose sporting reserve, home today to UTS Australian Football Club, Eastern Suburbs Juniors and Little Athletics, Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club and Wentworth Tennis, with the Frank Dixon grandstand (built 1936, reduced in size in the mid-1980s) still standing.
Australian rules football (since at least 1903, still played there today), athletics, cricket (Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club) and tennis.
