Wagga Wagga Showgrounds

Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Australia

Wagga Wagga Showgrounds, Wagga Wagga, Australia — opened not confirmed, 3 rugby league games hosted, home of no dedicated rugby league club tenant identified — every recorded fixture is a Riverina representative side against a touring international team.

Sourcing caveat: Significant uncertainty surrounds this entry: only the 1932 Great Britain match (attendance 9,000) could be confirmed as played at a ground specifically named "Wagga Showground" in sources checked. Rugby League Project's own database attributes two other Riverina-vs-touring-side matches from this era (1960 v France, 11,000; 1962 v Great Britain, 5,191) to a separately named venue, "Bolton Park" — whether this is the same physical ground under a different name, or a genuinely different Wagga Wagga sportsground, could not be established. Our recorded date range extending to 1965 and top crowd of 15,000 could not be corroborated by any source found; the best-supported figures from independent research are a 1932-1962 span and a top crowd of 11,000. This entry is published with these gaps stated plainly rather than assumed away.

Name history

  • Wagga Showground — used in period rugby league match records; identity relative to other central Wagga Wagga sportsgrounds is not fully established

Rugby league history

Wagga Wagga has long been a rugby league heartland of the Riverina/South West NSW region (Group 9 Rugby League) and a regular stop for touring international sides playing regional representative teams through the mid-20th century, a common pattern for Kangaroo, Lions and French touring squads of that era. The city's rugby league identity later centred on other grounds — Eric Weissel Oval (home to Wagga Magpies/Brothers RLFC until its 2015 demolition, and host to a 1988 Rugby League World Cup match) and Robertson Oval — and, more recently, on Geohex Park (formerly McDonald's Park/the Wagga Equex Centre), which has hosted NRL premiership matches since 2019.
