Rugby league history
Young Showground, in the South West Slopes town of Young, New South Wales, was a home venue for the town's rugby league team through the Maher Cup era, the fiercely contested challenge-style regional competition that dominated South West NSW and Riverina bush football from the 1920s to the 1970s. Rugby League Project records matches there from 1927 to 1971 against fellow Maher Cup towns including Harden-Murrumburrah, Cootamundra, Gundagai, Wagga Wagga, Junee, West Wyalong, Temora, Cowra, Tumut and Grenfell, with crowds typically in the hundreds to low thousands. The ground also hosted representative and touring fixtures well above that level: a Southern Division side lost 24-20 to the touring New Zealand Kiwis before a crowd of 5,000 on 6 August 1930, a combined Queensland side beat South West NSW there in 1931, and a Riverina/Western selection lost 22-5 to the 1952 Kiwis before 3,351 spectators.
