Ground facts

Openedunknown (This site's underlying venue data lists the area as Cairns (Bamaga), but Bamaga sits at the very tip of Cape York Peninsula, roughly 960-1,000km from Cairns by road -- a multi-day drive, not a nearby town. Yusia Ginau was, per a Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council community newsletter, the younger brother of Bamaga Ginau, the Saibai Island elder after whom the town of Bamaga itself is named; the oval honours Yusia Ginau's own contribution to promoting sport in the community -- this account rests on a single local-community source and could not be independently cross-checked. A QRL news article separately describes a third Intrust Super Cup match at this venue (Northern Pride 26-10 Norths Devils, 24 August 2015) that does not appear in this site's 2-match data -- a genuine, disclosed gap rather than a silently added match, since it could not be confirmed against Rugby League Project's own venue record.)

Name history

    Rugby league history

Yusia Ginau Oval is the sporting and community hub of Bamaga, a Torres Strait Islander community at the tip of Cape York Peninsula -- one of the most remote venues in this site's rugby league data. Alongside hosting the local Bamaga Roos and the regional Dan Ropeyarn Cup carnival, it has twice hosted Queensland Cup fixtures for Cairns-based Northern Pride, drawing crowds reported to exceed the town's own population: a 2011 match (Souths Logan 40-22 Northern) and a 2017 match (Northern 40-16 Wynnum-Manly).
