1967-68 NBA Season Standings

The Boston Celtics reclaimed the title, beating the Los Angeles Lakers 4-2 in the Finals, while Wilt Chamberlain (Philadelphia) won regular-season MVP despite the 76ers finishing atop the East ahead of Boston in the standings but falling short in the playoffs. Bill Russell, in his first year as player-coach after taking over from Red Auerbach, became the first Black head coach to win a major professional sports championship in the United States. The Seattle SuperSonics and San Diego Rockets joined as expansion franchises, growing the league to 12 teams for the first time, and the regular-season schedule expanded to a full 82 games, the length that has remained standard ever since (aside from occasional lockout- or pandemic-shortened seasons). St. Louis, the West's regular-season leader at 56-26, was swept aside by the Lakers in the conference finals.

Sourcing caveat: Structure was still a single 'Eastern Division'/'Western Division' (not conferences); expansion brought the league to 12 teams (Seattle SuperSonics, San Diego Rockets).
