1943 NFL Season — Final Standings
Final regular-season standings for the most severely disrupted season of the war years: the league contracted to just 8 teams as the Cleveland Rams suspended operations entirely for the season and the depleted Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers were forced to merge into the "Steagles" (officially the Phil-Pitt Combine), a team whose players held day jobs in defense plants. Washington and the Giants tied atop the Eastern Division at 6-3-1, forcing a rare tiebreaker playoff (Washington won 28-0), before Chicago Bears beat Washington for the title. This one-season merger ended after 1943; Philadelphia resumed independent operation in 1944, and Pittsburgh would merge again the following year with a different partner.
