Club Background

Castleford Tigers are an English rugby league club founded in 1926, based at Wheldon Road in West Yorkshire, popularly nicknamed "the Jungle." The club has won the Challenge Cup four times (1935, 1969, 1970, 1986) and, in the Super League era, topped the regular-season table to win the League Leaders' Shield for the first time in club history in 2017 under head coach Daryl Powell. Despite that 2017 triumph and a run to that year's Grand Final, Castleford have never won the Super League Grand Final or the old league Championship — as of the end of the 2025 season this remains the case.

Club history

Castleford's rugby league roots trace to junior clubs in the town from the early 1910s-20s, but the present senior club's official founding is 1926, after three earlier applications to join the Rugby Football League (1923-25) were rejected. Wheldon Road was purchased in 1926 and opened as the club's ground in 1927, and it has remained their home for nearly a century, latterly known as "the Jungle."

The club's golden era of cup success came in two bursts: a Challenge Cup win in 1934-35 (beating Huddersfield 11-8) and a run of finals either side of 1970 — beating Salford in 1968-69 and Wigan in 1969-70 — followed by a fourth win in 1985-86 over Hull Kingston Rovers 15-14, Bob Beardmore winning the Lance Todd Trophy. Castleford were Challenge Cup runners-up in 1991-92, 2014, and 2021 (losing to St Helens 26-12).

In the Super League era, Castleford's landmark season was 2017 under head coach Daryl Powell: they finished well clear at the top of the regular season, winning the League Leaders' Shield for the first time in their history, then beat St Helens in a dramatic golden-point playoff semi-final (a Luke Gale drop goal) to reach their first — and to date only — Grand Final. There they lost 6-24 to Leeds Rhinos at Old Trafford, extending the club's record of never having won a top-flight league title. Powell coached the club from 2013 to 2021 before leaving for Warrington Wolves. Notable modern players include Luke Gale (2017 Man of Steel), Rangi Chase (2011 Man of Steel), Denny Solomona (a club-record 42 tries in 2016), and Paul McShane (2020 Man of Steel); historic greats include Alan Hardisty (206 career tries, 1958-1971) and record appearance-holder John Joyner (585+ games).

More recently, the club finished 3rd in 2018 (losing a playoff semi-final to eventual champions Wigan), reached the 2021 Challenge Cup final (lost), and has had a leaner run since — 10th in 2024, 11th in 2025 — while retaining Super League status. Ownership changed hands with Martin Jepson becoming chairman in October 2024 and completing a majority takeover in May 2025.

Sourcing caveat: Sources give slightly different framings of the club's origins — Wikipedia notes informal history from 1912/1922 alongside official league admission in 1926; the official club site simply states "entered Rugby League in 1926," which is the year used here. The "Jungle" nickname's origin date is inconsistent between sources (sponsorship-driven usage implied from the 2000s vs. the official site dating it to 2014) and isn't resolved further here. Minor honours (John Player Trophy 1976-77, Regal Trophy 1993-94) rely on the official club site alone and are less rigorously corroborated than the Challenge Cup/Grand Final facts above.
