Rugby league history
Huddersfield Giants (then Huddersfield RLFC) moved into the newly built stadium in 1994 alongside Huddersfield Town FC, relocating from their long-time home at Fartown. The ground has been a mainstay of international rugby league, hosting multiple Great Britain Test matches between 1998 and 2004 and serving as a Rugby League World Cup venue in 1995, 2000, 2013 and 2021, with a record attendance of 24,375. At the 2021 World Cup (played Oct–Nov 2022, as John Smith's Stadium at the time), it hosted the quarter-final in which Australia beat Lebanon 48–4 on 4 November 2022, in front of 8,206.
The stadium is a genuine dual-code ground, shared equally with EFL club Huddersfield Town, who also moved there in 1994.
