Rugby league history
Hosted rugby league's first Challenge Cup activity in the code's earliest years and the 1970 Rugby League World Cup Final between Great Britain and Australia. Has staged Ashes/international Test matches (including the 1978 Ashes Test) and 12+ World Cup fixtures since 1960, plus multiple Championship Grand Finals and Challenge Cup semi-finals. Holds the ground's rugby league attendance record: 40,175 for Leeds vs Bradford Northern on 21 May 1947.
The adjacent Headingley Cricket Ground shares the site and hosts Test cricket — a physically separate arena, not the rugby stadium.
