Rugby league history
Far North Queensland's premier multi-sport venue, home to Cairns' Queensland Cup side Northern Pride since the club's 2008 formation and long used by the Far North Queensland Rugby League and, earlier, the Cairns Cyclones. It has hosted several significant international and representative rugby league fixtures, including an Aboriginal Australia side's 32-10 win over Papua New Guinea in 1999 (attendance 5,200), a 2009 Pacific Cup quarter-final between Cook Islands and Samoa, and three matches at the 2017 Rugby League World Cup. A 2004 NRL pre-season trial between North Queensland and Manly-Warringah drew a reported record crowd of 20,000, and Barlow Park has also hosted an NRL premiership fixture (South Sydney vs Gold Coast, 2013, attendance 16,118). The ground has been repeatedly upgraded, including a 2024 floodlighting upgrade to broadcast standard, with further improvements planned ahead of the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
Also a major cricket, athletics (host of four Oceania Area Athletics Championships), rugby union and soccer venue, and has hosted large concerts (Midnight Oil 1997, John Farnham 2003).
