Rugby league history

The Wynnum-Manly Seagulls acquired the Wondall Road land in Manly West in 1964 and opened their new ground there in 1967, initially known simply as the Wondall Road ground; it was renamed Kougari Oval around 1971, taking its name from an Aboriginal word for seagull, fitting for the club's nickname. It has been the Seagulls' home for their entire Brisbane/Queensland Cup history since, with facilities including a covered stand, viewing from the adjoining Wynnum Manly Leagues Club, and a grass hill at one end. Because of Wynnum Manly's long-standing affiliation with the Brisbane Broncos, the ground has also hosted occasional NRL trial matches — a 2011 Broncos-Storm trial there drew a crowd of around 8,000.
