Borough Park (Workington)

Workington, Cumbria, England

Borough Park (Workington), Workington, England — opened 1937, 250 rugby league games hosted, home of Workington Town (tenant, 1945-1956) — the ground's principal occupant has otherwise always been Workington A.F.C. (football).

Sourcing caveat: This is a distinct ground from 'Borough Park (Blackpool)' (Blackpool Borough's 1963-1987 rugby league ground), and is unrelated other than sharing a generic English ground name. Wikipedia and Rugby League Project agree that Workington Town's rugby league tenancy at this Borough Park ran 1945-1956, ending when the club moved to Derwent Park (now the Fibrus Community Stadium) — but this site's own venues directory lists the venue's games as running through to 2019, a span not corroborated by either source checked. That later date could reflect occasional non-first-team, representative, or amateur rugby league fixtures at Borough Park in intervening decades that were not confirmed here, or could be a data artifact; it has not been used in this write-up without corroboration.

Name history

  • Borough Park — 1937-present (base name; primarily a football ground, home of Workington A.F.C.)

Rugby league history

Borough Park is primarily Workington A.F.C.'s football ground, opened in 1937, but it also served as Workington Town's first home after the rugby league club was formed in 1944-45 — the two codes ground-shared there from 1945 until 1956, when Town moved into their own purpose-built rugby ground, Derwent Park (today's Fibrus Community Stadium), ending the arrangement. Borough Park itself later became known for football, including a record 21,000 crowd for an FA Cup tie against Manchester United in January 1958. In 2025 Cumberland Council announced a Cumberland Sports Village redevelopment of the Borough Park site intended to be shared by both Workington A.F.C. and Workington Town, due for completion around 2027.
