Crown Flatt (Old)

Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, England

Crown Flatt (Old), Dewsbury, England — opened 1876, 1,656 rugby league games hosted, home of None (demolished 1991) — historically Dewsbury Rams (Dewsbury District & Savile), 1876–1991.

Sourcing caveat: The exact opening/first-match date is not independently confirmed beyond the 1876 tenancy year; a precise capacity figure for the ground's final years was not found in sources checked, so it is omitted rather than estimated. Note that Dewsbury's current, separate ground (now the FLAIR Stadium) was itself informally called "Crown Flatt" for its first few years after opening in 1994, which can cause confusion between the two distinct venues in some sources — this entry covers only the original ground, demolished in 1991.

Rugby league history

Crown Flatt was Dewsbury's home for 115 years, from a sub-tenancy secured in 1876 (the year after the club's 1875 founding) until 1991. It drew some of the biggest crowds seen at a rugby ground anywhere in Yorkshire in its Victorian heyday — around 16,000 attended a Yorkshire Cup semi-final in March 1880, reportedly the largest assemblage yet seen on a football ground in the county — and its official attendance record was 26,584, for a Yorkshire Cup tie against Halifax on 30 October 1920. The ground's historic wooden stand was destroyed by arson in September 1988; the club played on for a few more seasons before their final match there, a 19-19 draw with Barrow on 14 April 1991, after which Crown Flatt was demolished and the site redeveloped as housing. Dewsbury moved into a new, purpose-built ground nearby in September 1994 — initially also called Crown Flatt, then Ram Stadium, Tetley's Stadium and (currently) the FLAIR Stadium — which is a physically separate, still-active venue from this original ground.

Hosted an England v Wales rugby union international on 15 February 1890, five years before the code split that created rugby league — a rare pre-split representative fixture at what became a rugby league ground.
