Name history

  • Earl Park — 1925-1939 (named for Lancelot Earl, the local benefactor who developed and owned the ground)

Rugby league history

Earl Park was St George's first home ground, opened in 1925 and named for Lancelot Earl, the local benefactor whose family land it occupied. The Dragons played their NSWRFL premiership and reserve-grade home fixtures there for fourteen seasons, including the record-setting 91-6 rout of Canterbury-Bankstown on 11 May 1935 — at the time the highest score, largest winning margin and most individual points (by Les Griffin) in the competition's history — and the notorious 'Earl Park Riot' during a match against Balmain on 11 August 1928. When Lancelot Earl died in 1938, neither St George nor the NSWRFL could raise the £5,000 needed to buy the freehold, and the club relocated to Hurstville Oval from 1940. The Arncliffe site was sold and built over soon after; no trace of the ground remains today.
