Rugby league history
Edgeley Park was built as a rugby ground in 1891 for Stockport RFC, on land donated by the Sykes family of the Sykes Bleaching Company, and became a founder-era Northern Union venue when the code split from rugby union in 1895. Stockport RFC played eight seasons of Northern Union/rugby league football there (1895-96 to 1902-03) before financial difficulties, competition from association football's rising popularity locally, and the loss of leading players to the breakaway Northern Rugby League in 1901-02 forced the club to disband in August 1903. Stockport County F.C., which had shared the ground since around 1902, took over as sole tenant and absorbed the rugby club's liabilities - meaning Edgeley Park's rugby league history predates, and directly gave way to, its long football tenancy.
Long-time home of Stockport County F.C. (Football League/National League); also hosted Sale Sharks (rugby union) from 2003 to 2012, and the 1978 World Lacrosse Championship final.
