Rugby league history

Geelong's AFL heartland ground, still commonly known by its original name Kardinia Park (the managing body remains the government-run Kardinia Park Stadium Trust), hosted its only rugby league match on 12 February 2023: a 2023 NRL Pre-Season Challenge trial in which the Sydney Roosters beat Melbourne Storm 32-24 in front of 7,857 -- around 20% of the ground's capacity. This was very much a one-off, new-market exhibition booking rather than any ongoing rugby league presence -- the venue has no rugby league tradition beyond this single trial, and no further matches have followed.
