Hanson Lane
Halifax, West Yorkshire, England
Hanson Lane, Halifax, England — opened Not confirmed (Halifax matches recorded here from 21 September 1895), 81 rugby league games hosted, home of Halifax (also hosted Bramley and a neutral 1903/04 First Division Final).
Sourcing caveat: Distinct from both Thrum Hall and The Shay in our data set, but its exact relationship to Thrum Hall (predecessor ground on the same street, vs. a mislabelled/overlapping data entry) is not resolved by the sources checked — flagged rather than guessed. The presence of Bramley and a Bradford-Salford Final in the same venue log, well outside Halifax's own tenure, is also unexplained and should be treated with caution.
Ground facts
| Opened | Not confirmed (Halifax matches recorded here from 21 September 1895) (Genuinely unresolved. Wikipedia's Thrum Hall article states Halifax used an earlier 'Hanson Lane ground which stood opposite' the site later developed as Thrum Hall, and that Halifax moved to Thrum Hall in 1886 — which would place Hanson Lane's active period before 1886. But Rugby League Project logs its own separate 'Hanson Lane' venue with recorded matches only from 1895 to 1904 (after the 1886 move), including Halifax league fixtures in the 1895/96 season and — puzzlingly — later Challenge Cup ties credited to Bramley (1902-04) and a 1903/04 First Division Final between Bradford and Salford. It is unclear whether RLP's 'Hanson Lane' venue is the same pre-1886 ground referenced by Wikipedia, a mislabelling/duplicate of early Thrum Hall records (Thrum Hall sits on Hanson Lane, the street), or reflects genuine shared/neutral use of a Hanson Lane ground by multiple clubs through 1904. Treat all dates here as sourced strictly to the RLP match log, not as a resolved ground history.) |

- Hanson Lane — in use for recorded rugby football/rugby league matches, 1895–1904
Rugby league history
Rugby League Project's 'Hanson Lane' venue entry records 81 matches, opening with Halifax's Northern Rugby Football Union fixtures from 21 September 1895 (Halifax 6-0 Widnes) and running through several Halifax league matches that season. Later entries in the same log are credited to Bramley (Challenge Cup ties, 1902/03-1903/04) and to a First Division 1903/04 Final between Bradford and Salford (28 April 1904), suggesting the ground — or a venue sharing the name — saw use beyond Halifax's own fixtures. Hanson Lane is also the street on which Halifax's much better-documented long-term home, Thrum Hall, stood, and Wikipedia describes an earlier Halifax ground of that name on the opposite side of the road, used before the 1886 move to Thrum Hall. Given the conflicting chronology, this write-up does not attempt to resolve exactly which ground(s) the 'Hanson Lane' venue records refer to — see the caveat.
