Name history
Rugby league history
Hedley Lawson Park is the long-time home of Gateshead RFC, a rugby union club, formally named in 1938 in honour of club stalwart Hedley Lawson after the club had used the site since 1922. It hosted rugby league only briefly, in 2003, when the professional club then known as Gateshead (forerunner of Newcastle Thunder) played at least two matches there rather than at its usual Gateshead International Stadium; the reason for this is not documented.
