Rugby league history

Huntington Stadium, on Jockey Lane on the northern edge of York, was built by Ryedale District Council and completed in October 1989, initially known as Ryedale Stadium. It became the home of York Wasps and, after that club's later reformation, York City Knights, hosting rugby league in the city for a quarter of a century. Its last recorded match was a 2014 Championship 1 play-off semi-final in which the Knights lost 32-24 to Hunslet Hawks. The ground was subsequently demolished, with an archaeological survey of a Roman marching-camp site on the land carried out in 2015 before the site was redeveloped into the York Community Stadium complex, which opened in December 2020 as the Knights' new home.
