Lathlain Oval

Perth (Lathlain), Western Australia, Australia

Lathlain Oval, Perth (Lathlain), Australia — opened 1958, 5 rugby league games hosted, home of Perth Football Club (WAFL, since 1959); training base and AFLW home of West Coast Eagles (AFL) since a 2019 redevelopment.

Sourcing caveat: A Wikipedia summary of this venue's rugby league history omits the 1958 Great Britain fixture entirely (listing only four matches, not five) and gives a different date (17 February, not 27 March) for the 1977 Amco Cup game and a different scoreline (64-6, not 62-6) for the 1999 NRL match. Rugby League Project's figures -- which match our own directory's recorded top crowd, first-used and last-used years exactly -- are treated as the more reliable source here.

Ground facts

Opened1958 (Secondary sources (Wikipedia, Austadiums) give a formal opening date of 1959 or 1962, but Rugby League Project's own records show the ground hosting a full international fixture in August 1958 -- a year or more before either claimed opening date. This likely reflects an earlier, informal ground later superseded by a formal redevelopment, but no source confirms that explanation, so the gap is noted rather than resolved.)

Rugby league history

Now primarily an AFL/WAFL training and administration base rather than a big spectator venue, this Perth suburban oval nonetheless has a genuine five-match rugby league record spanning four decades. The earliest, on 24 August 1958, was a full international -- a Western Australia representative side lost 23-69 to a touring Great Britain Lions squad, drawing 3,127. Two 1987 National Panasonic Cup preliminary-round fixtures followed (WA sides beating South Australia and losing to Victoria), alongside a 1977 Amco Cup preliminary game against the Northern Territory. The largest crowd by some margin, 8,236, came on 8 May 1999 for a full NRL premiership fixture: Western Suburbs' 62-6 home loss to Melbourne, part of the NRL's late-1990s push to showcase matches in non-traditional markets following the Super League war.
