Rugby league history
An early, short-lived first-grade NSWRFL venue during rugby league's second decade in Sydney, home to Newtown before the club moved to Erskineville Oval in 1913 due to the poor playing surface and lack of facilities here. Standout crowd: 12,000 for Newtown 16-3 Balmain on 29 Apr 1911. Several NSWRFL Reserve Grade finals were also hosted (semi-final Sep 1910; quarter-finals Aug 1911 and Aug 1912). The venue's name plausibly derives from Metters Ltd, a Sydney stove and ironworks manufacturer with a plant in the area, though this specific connection is not explicitly documented in any source found.
