Moss Lane (Morecambe)

Lancaster (Morecambe), Lancashire, England

Moss Lane (Morecambe), Lancaster (Morecambe), England — opened Not confirmed (in use by 5 September 1896), 119 rugby league games hosted, home of None (Morecambe's rugby football club, a Northern Union/rugby league member from 1896, disbanded in August 1906).

Sourcing caveat: The venue's exact opening date is not confirmed — only that it was already Morecambe's ground for their first recorded Northern Union match on 5 September 1896. This venue is unrelated to modern Morecambe F.C. (association football), despite that being a plausible-sounding assumption — the actual identity, confirmed by Rugby League Project's own team records, is the historic (1896–1906) Northern Union/rugby league club Morecambe, whose second ground, Quay Meadow, RLP also lists (1898–1900) but which is out of scope here.

Rugby league history

Moss Lane, near the seafront in north-west Morecambe (in the area now occupied by a Morrisons supermarket), was the home ground of Morecambe's rugby football club through its entire spell in the professional Northern Union/rugby league ranks, 1896 to 1906. The club was a perennial strugglers, finishing bottom of the Lancashire Senior Competition in each of its first three seasons and rarely escaping the bottom two of whichever league it played in. Its Northern Union existence ended when the Midland Railway company, which owned the Moss Lane site, gave the club notice to quit; members voted to dissolve the club at their AGM on 23 August 1906.

This is a separate, much older ground from Morecambe F.C.'s (association football) history — that club was founded in 1920 and played at Christie Park from 1927 to 2010 before moving to its current Mazuma Mobile Stadium; it has no recorded connection to Moss Lane.
