Name history
Rugby league history
Preston Avenue has been the home of Percy Park RFC, a rugby union club, since 1896. It hosted rugby league only briefly: the professional club then known as Gateshead (forerunner of Newcastle Thunder) played one recorded fixture there in 2003 and another in 2004, evidently a temporary arrangement away from its usual stadium rather than a settled tenancy.
