Rugby league history
The Riverside is primarily a football ground with no resident rugby league club, making its selection as a 2021 Rugby League World Cup venue notable in itself — on record, the only rugby league fixture the ground has ever hosted. It staged a Group D fixture on 30 October 2022 in which Tonga thrashed the Cook Islands 92–10 in front of 8,342 fans, a result that sent Tonga through to the quarter-finals as group winners and eliminated the Cook Islands. The match was part of the tournament's strategy of taking rugby league to non-traditional heartlands in the north east of England.
The stadium is Middlesbrough FC's home ground and has also hosted England men's football fixtures.
