Rugby league history
St Luke's Park, on Gipps Street in Concord, was an early home ground of the Western Suburbs Magpies in the fledgling NSWRFL competition (founded 1908). Rugby League Project records 79 matches at the venue, from a reserve-grade Wests v Easts fixture on 30 April 1910 through to a first-grade Western Suburbs v Canterbury match on 8 August 1942 — consistent with Wikipedia's account of Wests using the ground as their main home in 1910-1911 before later moving on (eventually to Pratten Park from 1920), with a brief return to St Luke's Park in 1942. The site was later redeveloped as Concord Oval, which opened in 1985 and went on to host matches in the 1987 Rugby World Cup.
