Rugby league history

Built at the rear of the St Marys Rugby League Club's premises in western Sydney and opened in January 2002, funded entirely by the club itself (reported cost around $6.25 million) after Penrith Council could not find the money to build it. From 2003 to 2007 St Marys ran a joint venture with the Penrith Panthers as 'St Marys/Penrith Cougars', fielding sides in the Jim Beam Cup and Premier League; the arrangement ended amid financial pressure from poker-machine tax changes and smoking restrictions. In the 2000s the ground also hosted international rugby league, including 2006/07 World Cup qualifiers (Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Cook Islands) and, in 2018, Emerging Nations World Championship fixtures. It has continued to host NSW Cup matches involving Penrith's feeder team, and Penrith junior/schoolboy rugby league finals.
