Club history

Penrith's rugby league history stretches back to local Western Districts competitions from 1912, but the modern club was formed in 1966 when the NSWRL expanded the premiership by two teams, entering the top grade in 1967 alongside Cronulla. The panther emblem came from a public competition. Jersey colours have shifted more than most clubs': an original blue was dropped for brown and white, earning Penrith the tag "the Chocolate Soldiers"; by 1991 the club had moved to the black, red, yellow and green-striped "Liquorice Allsorts" design, which fans voted to bring back in 2017. The club has played at Penrith Park/Penrith Stadium since 1967.

After two decades of struggle, Penrith won their maiden premiership in 1991, beating Canberra 19-12. A second title followed in 2003, an underdog win over the Sydney Roosters. But the club's defining era arrived under coach Ivan Cleary (appointed 2018, working alongside his son and captain Nathan Cleary), who built a roster including Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo and James Fisher-Harris into a genuine dynasty, winning four consecutive premierships from 2021 to 2024 — an unprecedented modern-era four-peat and the first time any club had won four straight NRL titles.
