1968 Season — Final Standings (NFL & AFL)

Final regular-season standings. Baltimore's dominant 13-1 season and NFL Championship win over Cleveland set up Super Bowl III, where Joe Namath's AFL champion New York Jets pulled off a 16-7 upset that forced a permanent reassessment of the AFL's competitiveness — arguably the single most important game of the pre-merger era. The AFL needed its first-ever divisional tiebreaker game to settle an identical 12-2 tie between Oakland and Kansas City in the West (Oakland won 41-6) before the Jets beat the Raiders for the AFL title. Expansion team Cincinnati Bengals, under founding coach Paul Brown, debuted in the AFL West at 3-11. New Orleans and the New York Giants swapped NFL divisions (Century/Capitol) between 1967 and 1968, a scheduling realignment rather than a relocation.
