Rugby league history

Rochdale Hornets' home for 94 years from 1894 to 1988, the Athletic Grounds hosted the 1923-24 Challenge Cup Final outright — Wigan's 21-4 win over Oldham on 12 April 1924, in front of 41,831, in the era before the Challenge Cup Final settled permanently at Wembley. The ground's own league attendance record was a more modest 19,654, for a home defeat to Oldham on 16 October 1954. It was the site of a serious 1939 stand collapse during a Challenge Cup semi-final between Salford and Wigan, which killed two spectators and injured seventeen more. Alongside rugby league, the Athletic Grounds hosted speedway (1928-30 and 1970-71) and greyhound racing (1932-1969); the first fatal speedway accident recorded in Britain happened there in 1928. Rochdale Hornets sold the ground in 1987 for £2.6m and moved to groundshare at Rochdale A.F.C.'s Spotland Stadium (their current home, now the Crown Oil Arena); a Morrisons supermarket now occupies the former site.

Also a long-running speedway and greyhound-racing venue; Britain's first fatal speedway accident was recorded here in 1928.
