Rugby league history
Rugby league's history at Bramall Lane is longer than often assumed: a Northern Union tour match between Yorkshire and Australia was staged there on 25 September 1911, in front of 4,000 spectators, and Sheffield Eagles used the ground as an occasional home venue across three separate eras — the English Championship (1989-90), Super League (1996), and as the merged Huddersfield-Sheffield Giants (2000) — before it was chosen as a venue for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup (played Oct–Nov 2022), hosting a single group match on 29 October 2022 in which England thrashed Greece 94–4 in front of 18,760.
Bramall Lane is the oldest major stadium in the world still hosting professional football, and it was also a leading cricket venue (home to Yorkshire CCC and an 1902 Ashes Test) until 1973.
